After the resounding success, and the profits generated, by the building of the Suez Canal by the French, eyes are cast westwards to the narrow strip of land connecting North and South America, and the prize of cutting out the hazardous journey around Cape Horn with a new waterway. It does not go well from the start, apart from dubious means of raising money, and ends in a complete financial disaster.
